Those of you operating in the northern tier have probably learned over the years how to keep your equipment performing better during those cold, cold days and prevent high-cost damage to sensitive components. Cold temperatures cause all sorts of physical changes in your sweeper. Hydraulic oil thickens, the diesel fuel will gel, water freezes, the rubber will stiffen, and poly material will become brittle. Diesel Fuel – Untreated diesel fuel will gel and even form wax crystals that can become so dense that it will prevent the fuel from passing …

BOISE, Idaho — Twenty thousand tons… that’s 40 million pounds of sand Ada County Highway District has spread this winter on county roadways. “This is going to be huge, we put down a lot of sand. It’s back to business for Schwarze after attending the NPE in Nashville again this year. There was a whole team of representatives at the show this year, covering the wide range of street and parking lot sweepers Schwarze offers. It was great to see so many people interested in the sweeping business. There was a good mix of existing customers looking to expand their fleet of sweepers and also a great number of new prospects who were interested in our products, parts, training and customer service support. Did you know that the Schwarze regenerative air sweepers have advanced side broom controls? Series Hydraulics Circuits Most air sweeper hydraulic circuits operate in series that drive the left broom with hydraulic oil and exhaust it from the one on the right. While this may achieve similar speeds across the two brooms as the oil flows through both motors, it cuts the available torque in half, in essence making them single broom sweepers when used to sweep heavy material. This means, to be able to efficiently sweep heavy material with …

Dogs and cats, just like any other animals, gravitate to the scent of stinky debris and rotting food. Unfortunately, this type of debris tends to gather in and along the gutters and may also contain sharp objects, toxic chemicals, or other unsafe materials. Besides that, anything found in the gutter most likely contains mold and bacteria. And since animals don’t know any better, it falls on you to keep them from eating or touching this waste. The attraction of this type of debris in the gutters can put your pet …

It is critical to follow the greasing charts on your sweeper’s maintenance schedule. Greasing not only lubricates the component, but it also pushes old grease out of the mechanism and helps to prevent excessive wear. Regularly check your grease points (even if your sweeper has an Auto-Lube system) to make sure that the fitting is taking grease and the connection has not been damaged. When manually lubricating bearings, over-greasing is easy to do, and that’s just as bad as not greasing at all. Over-greasing a bearing can cause the bearing …

I speak with sweeping contractors daily and am amazed at one common thread among the most successful operators. There are several, but for the purpose of this writing, we’ll focus on one. Image. The most successful sweeping contractors that I encounter present a polished and professional image. They run an organized, structured program for their clients and their employees. The ones that think it doesn’t matter or they can’t afford it will continue to flounder in a business that’s been known to chew you up and spit you out over …

The broom extension spring controls the extension speed and travel of the side broom arm. This spring is located on the outside of the side broom arm and connected to the broom mounting bracket by a chain. The other end of the spring is attached to a large eyebolt attached to the side broom motor mount. The broom extension spring may need adjusting when: •  The broom does not fully extend during operation •  The broom extension speed is too slow You can adjust the speed and travel of the …
