Street Sweeper Glossary – L

Lane Closure Sweeping

Lane closure sweeping involves cleaning within a closed or controlled lane, often on highways or construction sites.

It requires proper traffic control, signage, and awareness. This type of sweeping improves safety and cleanup in active work zones.

Leaf Collection

Leaf collection is the removal of leaves from roadways and paved areas. Leaves can block drainage, create slippery conditions, and contribute to debris buildup.

Seasonal leaf management is important for municipalities and requires correct sweeper settings to handle light but bulky material.

Leak Detection

Leak detection involves identifying fluid or air leaks in the system. Signs include puddles, reduced pressure, or visible dripping.

Early detection prevents system damage, reduces downtime, and improves overall equipment reliability.

LED Work Light

LED work lights provide illumination for nighttime operation or low-visibility conditions. They improve operator safety and productivity.

LED lights are energy-efficient and durable but should be cleaned regularly to maintain brightness.

Lift Arm

A lift arm supports and raises components such as brooms or pickup heads. It relies on hydraulic force to move heavy components into position.

Proper lubrication and inspection ensure smooth operation and prevent alignment issues.

Lift Cylinder

A lift cylinder provides linear motion using hydraulic pressure. It is used to raise hoppers, deploy brooms, or operate other components.

Leaks or weak lifting performance indicate wear or hydraulic issues and should be addressed promptly.

Lift Linkage

Lift linkage connects hydraulic cylinders to components being moved. It transfers motion while maintaining alignment.

Worn pins or loose joints can create play and reduce precision, leading to uneven operation.

Litter Collection

Litter collection refers to removal of trash such as bottles, cans, paper, and packaging materials.

It improves appearance and reduces environmental contamination. Sweepers are often used alongside manual cleanup in high-traffic areas.

Load Distribution

Load distribution refers to how weight is spread across the machine and axles.

Proper distribution improves stability, braking, and handling, especially when the hopper is full.

Low Water Indicator

A low water indicator alerts the operator when the water tank needs refilling.

Maintaining adequate water is critical for dust control and operational effectiveness.

Lubrication Point

A lubrication point is a location where grease or oil must be applied to reduce friction.

Routine lubrication extends component life and prevents premature wear.
