When replacing a glued-on seal such as the dump door seal on your sweeper, some procedures should be followed to make the re-affixing of the new seal completely permanent.
Cleaning
After you have removed the old seal, thoroughly clean the area and remove any paint by sandblasting or using a wire wheel. If complete paint removal is not feasible, make sure that any paint left is not peeling and has the gloss completely broken.
When visibly clean, wipe off the area with an R50 surface cleaner, and prime the metal surfaces to be glued with a PR200 bare metal primer.
Bonding
Mix an SC2000 adhesive with activator per the product’s instructions and remove the protective strip from the new seal’s glue strip.
Apply the activated adhesive to the door and the seal (directly to the glue strip) where they will bond. When applying the cement, a scrubbing motion is preferred so that all voids on the surface to be bonded are filled in. The first coat of cement should be completely cured for at least 1 hour (overnight is ideal) before applying the second layer.
Apply a smooth second coat to the same areas with a brush as rapidly as possible. Avoid heavy builds, puddles or uneven coating, so the areas dry evenly at the same rate.
When the coated surfaces dry to a tack (after about 3 to 6 minutes) they are ready to bond. Test the coat with the back of a dry finger; it should feel tacky and not leave any cement on the finger. If the surfaces become too dry, apply another coat.
Attach the seal to the door and use a 2″ wide roller (stitcher) to apply the appropriate pressure to bond the two surfaces together.
Use overlapping roller strokes to make sure both surfaces fully contact each other, and all air is expelled. As soon as the entire seal is installed, close and latch the door for at least 3 hours. Overnight is best.
You now should have a new seal that will last.
